About the artwork
The Portraits of Self sculpture series explores the inner and outer perceptions that shape identity through thought and memory. These clay maquette portraits feature an unexpected element: the dome of the head is replaced by a petal-like form with a natural curve and delicate, rounded edge. This transformation bridges the human and natural worlds. The slanting "head" suggests an attitude of listening and curiosity, while the "shoulders" wrap around a cylindrical negative space, creating a tight vertical containment. The composition balances organic circular and square forms positioned perpendicularly, with triangular shapes at the base—pure geometries that evoke the mythic realms of Sky, Earth, and Pyramid. Through these elements, the self-portrait expands from the personal to the mythical and universal.
